The Power of Now as We Get Older

The Power of Now as We Get Older

I first read The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle almost a decade ago.

At the time, I was a driven female executive managing an international consulting firm. Tolle’s message was a stark contrast to my mindset. However, my parched spirituality eagerly consumed his ideas.

Recently, I stumbled upon my copy (or perhaps it found me), and I decided to reread it. Although I rarely reread books, some of my very smart friends say that revisiting a book can be more enlightening because you have changed. That was certainly true for The Power of Now. Here are some themes and quotes from the book that I find particularly relevant as we get older.

Living in the Present Moment

The central theme of the book is the importance of living in the present moment. It’s easy to get caught up in reflecting on the past or worrying about the future. Embracing the now can lead to a more fulfilling and peaceful life.

  • “Realize that the present moment is all you ever have.”
  • “You can always cope with the present moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only a mind projection – you cannot cope with the future.”

Transcending the Ego

Tolle discusses the concept of the ego and how it can dominate our thoughts and actions. Understanding and transcending the ego can help us find true self-awareness and inner peace, moving beyond societal roles and past identities.

  • “Ego… a false self, created by unconscious identification with the mind.”

Mindfulness and Inner Peace

Practicing mindfulness, as Tolle suggests, can help reduce stress and anxiety. As we navigate various life changes and challenges, cultivating a calm and peaceful mind is invaluable.

  • “Beauty, joy, inner peace – arise from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken.”

Acceptance and Letting Go

Tolle emphasizes the power of acceptance and letting go of resistance to what is. This theme can be particularly empowering, helping us accept our current stage in life and let go of regrets, disappointments, or unfulfilled expectations.

  • “Allow the present moment to be… Accept – then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.”

Connection to Being

The book explores the idea of connecting with one’s true self, or “being.” This can inspire a deeper connection with our inner essence, fostering a sense of spiritual fulfillment and purpose beyond external circumstances.

  • “This I am realization, this sense of your own presence, is not a thought. It arises from beyond the mind.”
  • “Love, joy, and peace are deep states of Being.”

Rereading this book made me realize that now is truly the best time to embrace this way of thinking. In Eastern and some Indigenous traditions, elders seek out mindfulness and contemplation to gain wisdom. What better time than now?
